Chapter Fifteen

NICHOLAE

Soft pillows cradled my head as the goddess of a woman straddled me. Arianna leaned down and flicked her tongue along the skin of my throat, licking the trail of blood left there by her sensuous bite. I wrapped my hands around her forearms, wanting to hold her there. The more I lost myself in her, the more I could cast away the doubt and confusion plaguing my mind. With blood and lust, I vowed to myself I would chase the traitorous thoughts away.

Arianna, however, did not stay melded against my body. She leaned up and swiped a ruby bead of blood from the corner of her mouth with a delicate finger.

“I must go.”

I leaned up and propped myself on my elbows. “Go where?”

“I have many duties, Nicholae.” Arianna pressed a finger against my mouth as I attempted to speak. “I cannot simply linger in bed with you all hours of the night. I have orders to give and plans that must be checked. Besides—” Arianna smiled devilishly at me “―I could use another bath in my own quarters.”

She glanced at the tub of water which had grown cold. Splatters of water and blood mixed on the stone floor and stained the rug. More crimson smears marred the bed sheets from our blood-fueled lust. “I’ll send in a servant to clean this up for you. Stay here until I return. I won’t be too long. Your trip to fetch Crimson must be repeated, though I think clearer instructions will need to be given.” A fire flashed in her green eyes, but it dimmed before it fueled more ire in her voice.

I didn’t want her to go, because without Arianna, there was no one there to distract me from my errant thoughts of the vampires plaguing my mind. Arguing with her would do no good, and would likely only cause her to be angry with me again, so I gave her a tight-lipped smile. “Very well. I shall await your return eagerly.”

Arianna’s full lips curved upward, then she left the room. I settled back against the pillows with an irritated sigh. My fingers pressed into my temples, urging the strain to cease. No matter how I tried, the nagging thought that something was amiss wouldn’t leave. Arianna had been angry with me, and rightly so, but she’d nearly killed me. She’d made up for it, but was such torture the way someone treated another they claimed to love?

And Laramie…I tried desperately to forget his words, yet he’d said this Crimson I was sent to fetch loved me. If Arianna despised the girl so much, shouldn’t she have ordered me to kill her on sight? Why have me bring Crimson back to the castle at all? None of it made sense, but the more I tried to unravel the intentions of Arianna and the claims of Laramie, the more my mind twisted into unease, confusion, and doubt.
